From beginner-friendly workshops to technical deep-dives, licensed Hams provide insight and training on topics related to the hobby. These educational, hands-on learning sessions present an opportunity to learn by doing. Whether you’re a seasoned operator or just "radio-curious," join us for our next session to discover what this hobby is all about.

Radio Operations 101

A practical introduction to getting on the air with confidence. We'll cover the essential "unwritten rules" and technical basics of radio communication. After a brief introduction and some practical instruction, you'll have the opportunity to apply these skills right away in a supportive, low-pressure environment.

  • Programming your radio
  • Mastering the ITU Phonetic Alphabet
  • Strategies for overcoming "mic-fright"
  • Net operations and etiquette
  • Common terms and radio pro-words
  • Standard signal reports (RST system)

This session is open to all OARS members, licensed hams, as well as those interested in getting licensed.

Materials needed

  • Your fully-charged handheld radio (HT)
  • Programming cable (if you have one)
  • Pen and paper for note-taking
  • Handheld radio user manual
